Boise Family Session Prep Guide

The most daunting task after booking family photos is the preparation part. What should we wear? How do we get ready? The good news is it doesn't have to be super complicated.

Family Sesssion Clothing

Wear stuff that makes you feel your best.

Be yourself. If you aren't fancy, don't pick out fancy clothes. If your kids have a strong preference for certain styles of clothing, listen to them. Keep in mind that some of the cutest family poses might be on the ground - make sure your outfits
can accommodate sitting and snuggling on the ground.

Make Sure Everything Fits Properly.

This is probably the most important piece of all. Even consider wearing your outfits out in public for a few hours to get a feel for them.

Coordinate clothes but don't match exactly.

Remember those photoshoots with all-white shirts and jeans? Break things up into different patterns but pull different colors. Do a mix of solids and patterns.

Think about color palette

I’ve put together some nice color palettes to help with color planning. Sometimes this is even better than looking at actual outfits, you can find that here:https://www.pinterest.com/tamarakenyon/color/

Additional Wardrobe Tips

For Mom: Choose your outfit first and build everyone else's outfits around yours.

Keep the colors neutral and not too bright. Florescent colors tend to color cast onto faces breaking up the nice balance in color.

For cooler weather sessions, dress in layers. (think tight underlayers). We can always pull away clothing but it's harder to add clothing.

For Men: Wear Undershirts.

Pay Attention to socks and undergarments. Think about the clothing that might show with movement.

Some of my favorite places to shop for family photos are Boden, Tea Collection, Childhoods Clothing, Zara Kids, and HM Kids.

What to Bring for your Session

Patience. Sometimes kids don't behave how you may want them to around guests. This is okay. A little mischief is just fine and sometimes needed to get some great reactions out of kids. It may take me asking a few times to get them to participate, and that is just fine. This is a process that I use to get kids to feel more comfortable with me. If you feel you might be getting frustrated,
take a little walk and I will work on the kiddos. As most parents know, sometimes kids behave better with strangers than their parents in certain settings. I will let you know if a backup is
needed!

Snacks. Think about snacks that are not too messy.

Stroller for the little ones. There will be some locations that this is not possible but it's nice to have a place to put the littles in case they need a rest.

Other Stuff: Don't worry about last-minute acne that may have show up. These little "friends" will be edited out once your final images have been selected.

Do not fake tan! It will delay the time it takes to get your images to you. I have to edit it out! It photographs blotchy and uneven.

Don't stress over this stuff! I've created this list to help with any little questions you might have. Overall, I want you to be relaxed and have fun. That is the best way to achieve the best results.
